What DeetsFilm collects
Nothing about you. There is no account, no sign-in, no analytics, no advertising, and no tracking pixel. The extension talks to one small server I run, described below, which keeps no logs and stores nothing about you.
What it does on your computer
- On the streaming sites you enable, it reads how far through the video you are and the title on the page. That is the whole of what it looks at. It cannot see the picture, and it does not read your account, your profile, your viewing history, or anything else on the page.
- It keeps your settings — whether the card appears automatically, whether it shows poster art, how early it appears, and which services it watches — in your browser's extension storage. Those never leave your device.
The one request it makes
To turn a title into the right Letterboxd page, DeetsFilm asks a small server I run on Cloudflare to look the film up in The Movie Database. That request contains the film's title and nothing else — no identifier, no account, nothing about you — and the server keeps no log of it. Cloudflare itself records ordinary request metadata, including IP addresses, under its own policy, the same as it does for the rest of deets.solutions. If the server is unreachable the extension asks TMDB directly instead — TMDB is a third party with its own privacy policy, and like any request your browser makes, it carries your IP address to whoever answers it.
Results are cached on your device so re-watching a film asks nobody anything.
Dynamic timing (optional, off by default)
The right moment to interrupt is a property of the film, not a setting — a post-credits scene changes it. If you turn this on, DeetsFilm can send a film's numeric database id and a number of seconds: the moment you flagged as the film's real ending, a thumbs up or down on a time somebody else suggested, and, alongside a flag, the time it had suggested to you. That is the entire message. No account, no name, no timestamp of when you watched, no record of which service you used, and no IP address is stored alongside it. It is off until you turn it on, and turning it off stops it.
Letterboxd
DeetsFilm never signs in to Letterboxd, never logs a film for you, and never touches your account. Clicking the card opens a normal Letterboxd page in a normal tab; everything after that is between you and Letterboxd, under their terms and their privacy policy. DeetsFilm is not affiliated with Letterboxd or with any streaming service.
Permissions, and why
Your browser will say DeetsFilm can read and change data on the streaming sites you turn on. It needs that to see the video's progress and the film title on the page. It asks for each service only when you enable that service, and for nothing else — turning a service off withdraws it.
Changes
If DeetsFilm ever starts sending anything anywhere, this page is updated before that ships, not after. Any such feature would be off by default and would ask first.
Contact
It is a personal project by one person. Email me with anything — a question, a correction, or a demand that I explain myself.
The rest of the site
This page covers the extension only. The site you are reading it on has its own, equally short, privacy page.
